Published Date : 23rd June 2017
As a parent, being obsessed with your child’s health is quite common. Ensuring your child doesn’t fall prey to those roguish germs and fall sick is a task in itself, what with the ever increasing exposure to environmental pollution and food contamination.
This is where strong immunity to external forces has a role to play. While falling ill once in a while is nomal, if you find your child catching more than his fair share of infections, maybe there is something amiss with the immune system.
How Do You Gauge Whether Your Child’s Immune System Is Healthy?
Some of the symptoms of a weakened immune system are:
1. Recurrent And Frequent Respiratory Infections:
Such as cold and flu.
2. Delayed Healing:
Mild wounds too take long to heal when the immunity of the child is low.
3. Failure To Gain Weight:
Poor growth and underweight status can be red signals pointing to poor immunity.
4. Nutritional Deficiencies:
A weak immune system leads to poor nutritional status in children. Visible signs of nutritional deficiencies like skin and hair changes, brittle nails, bruising easily and less attention span are tell-tale signs of poor immunity.
If your child seems to be exhibiting most of these symptoms, it could be an indication of poor immune system in the body. But before making any judgment on your own, it is important to understand one of the cause of a weak immunity could be lack of crucial nutrients.
Nutrition is a critical determinant of a healthy immune response. Inadequate nutrition is one the most common cause of immunodeficiency worldwide. Deficiency of even one single nutrient can result in altered immune responses, even if the deficit is relatively mild. Of all the micronutrients, zinc, selenium, iron, copper, vitamins A, C, D, E, B-12, B-6, and folic acid have crucial roles to play in influencing the immune response of a child.
Getting sick often may seem like just another part of growing up for a kid, but it is important to keep an eye on the frequency and severity. Good nutrition helps support the immune system. And a strong immune system does not just keep away frequent illness but also helps in proper growth and development of your child.
